WELCOME

As a photographer, one of the most rewarding genres to work in is maternity photography. Capturing the beauty and emotion of a mother-to-be is a unique experience that creates lifelong memories for parents and their children. But how do you make sure your maternity clients feel comfortable, safe, and at ease during their photo sessions? Here are some tips on how to make your maternity clients feel more at ease.

How to Make Your Maternity Clients Feel Comfortable

Discuss Ideas Ahead of Time

It’s also important to discuss the ideas beforehand and have a plan for the photo shoot so that everything goes smoothly. Discussing ideas ahead of time allows you to create an outline of poses, lighting, props, etc., which will give your client peace of mind knowing there is a plan in place for their maternity session. Your confidence in creating this plan will show through in your work as well as in how comfortable your client feels during the shoot.

Provide Your Maternity Clients with a Robe

One of the best ways to help your maternity clients feel more comfortable is by providing them with a robe they can slip into during their shoot. Even something simple like this can make them feel more confident and secure in their own skin. You can also encourage your client to bring their own robe or slippers if they prefer.

Engage All Five Senses

When you’re in the studio with your client, engage all five senses in order to create an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort. Put on some soothing music, use aromatherapy candles or essential oils, and bring out some snacks or refreshments that will give her energy and make her feel at home during her session.

Start with Clothed Portraits

Another way to help your maternity client relax is by starting the session off with clothed portraits and then easing into nude or semi-nude shots once she has gotten used to being photographed. This way she won’t be feeling overwhelmed right from the start of the session and can gradually become more comfortable as time goes on.

Communication Is Key

Before you begin shooting, explain what poses you plan on doing and how you plan on guiding or helping your client into certain positions if needed. When you are guiding her through certain poses or helping to adjust her outfit ask about how comfortable she is being touched or guided—respecting personal space is key! Asking questions throughout the maternity session also helps keep communication open between both parties which leads to trust-building between the photographer and client. And lastly, always talk to your client! Letting them know what angles look good or which poses work best will make them feel more involved in their own photoshoot rather than just sitting there while someone else takes pictures of them.

Be Yourself

When interacting with maternity clients it’s important to be yourself. Crack a few jokes, give compliments, smile often, and be vulnerable – let them know that you understand what they’re going through. People are attracted to authenticity so don’t be afraid to show your true colors!
